SW Police dogs died after the air conditioning in their patrol car broke on sweltering Sydney day

Two German shepherd police dogs tragically lost their lives after being left in a patrol car with a malfunctioning air conditioning system on a scorching day in Sydney’s southwest. The dogs, known for their service and loyalty, were inadvertently left unattended for several hours while their handlers responded to an urgent call. The incident occurred during one of the hottest days this month, with temperatures reaching sweltering highs that made conditions inside the vehicle unbearable.

When officers returned to the vehicle, they discovered that the air conditioning system had failed, leading to the tragic deaths of the two dogs. The SW Police Department has since launched an internal investigation to understand how the oversight occurred and to ensure better protocols in extreme heat conditions for the safety of K9 units.

The loss of these loyal service animals has struck a chord within the police force and the wider community, who remember the dogs for their bravery and dedication. The department has extended condolences to the handlers and plans to review procedures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future
